You're looking at this from the wrong direction. Certainly those music styles have their roots in their respective cultures. That does not mean, however, that other cultures have no valid input upon that media and the lines between these different perspectives is becoming blurrier by the day. What you really should be asking is why is it considered faux pas for whites to engange in rap music or for black to engage in rock music? Or any other culture experimenting in a medium created by any other culture? There should be no barriers established for the progression of music, no one is discrediting the roots of these music styles.

Would you say that The Stones and Rod Stewert (rock n roll) cannot be credited to a specific group either, that is, whites?

What about Polka and Country music? What about Salsa? Does that not belong to the Latins?

Hip Hop, Rap, R&B, Blues were all created by blacks. Let's give credit where credit is due.

In this country entitlement is an issue among Americans in general. Spoiled brat self centered arrogant Americans.

Understanding would be nice, but what I would like to see someone comment about (other than myself) is that I, for one, go to places like AOL Black Voices b/c I know I am welcomed there.

I remember when I was looking for a home and my sister was sending me articles about the mortgage mess. She sent one to me from a very popular news site and since I am always interested in what others have to say I will scroll down and read the comments and the first comment I see is "we are in a mortgage crisis b/c black people don't pay their bills." Time and time again on the internet I see posts like this in common and popular newspapers. I would like to ask whites how they would feel if they had to be beaten over the head with this type of nonsense on a daily basis. I love to read and I am thankful for places like AOL BV. I know I am welcomed there.

Having grown up in a poorer black neighborhood I was constantly told I will not amount to anything and that I should just settle for votech school eventhough I wanted to go to college (class of 1993 University of Pittsburgh), I had a very poor self esteem. I hated being black. Enter Ebony, Essence, Jet where I got to see successful people who looked like me. People do not understand the social impact of these magazines for black kids who most likely will grow up with self esteem issues. I thank God for the wonderful work they do to give a fair and balanced portrayal of black life. Thank you AOL BV, Essence, Ebony, and Jet.

"However, I consider black politicians to be universally incompetent!" Your own post makes it clear you have prejudice directed towards this particular group. Are you surprised you find fault in an article promoting equality?

As long as blacks embrace this thing called "Hip Hop" culture, they will be negatively stereotyped. Just exactly what is the possible advantage of the universal adaptation of a cultural paradigm which glamorizes drug use, promiscuity, violence, and, generally, all other forms of anti-social mayhem?

From where I sit, I am not seeing any lack of "diversity" in the media, and I believe the media attempts to limit the impact of stereotypes. When I see the ubiquitous black female news anchorwoman, I don't automatically think anything negative about her -- as long as she appears to be competent. Same thing goes for the ubiquitous black male sports announcer. However, I consider black politicians to be universally incompetant! If any of them were making the same sort of comments that true "black leaders" such as Bill Cosby have, I'd have a more positive opinion of them -- but most aren't.

I'll admit that I wouldn't want to be a black male in America today, but that's mainly because of the horrible role models and terrible "spokesmen" that would represent me.
